As the Senate considers a health care bill that contains taxpayer funding for abortion, I could not help but think that the gift of life has special meaning this time of year.

2,000 years ago a young mother gave birth to the child that would be the savior for all humanity. Today as we prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, it is important that we all pause to give thanks for our blessings.

I am especially grateful for my three children, Madison, Jeb and Ross. As a parent, I know how precious life is and I am committed to doing all that I can to protect it. And it is because of my strong belief in the right to life that I was so disturbed by recent developments in the proposed federal health care legislation.

Senate Democrats carefully crafted legislative language that could potentially create a perpetual battle over taxpayer funded abortions in State Houses across the country. The Senate version of the health care bill mandates federal funding for abortion in all health insurance plans, provided that one policy not covering abortion is offered in each state. To bypass taxpayer funding for abortions, state legislatures would be required to pass a law prohibiting coverage of abortion through state health care. Even then, taxpayers would still be funding abortions, just not in their state.

There is still an opportunity to make a difference on this legislation. In the coming weeks, a reconciled version of the health care bill will come up for a vote in the House, and with the support of like-minded Republicans and Democrats we can defeat it.
