The Greenville News: Gresham Barrett looking for Fred Thompson bump

By Rudolph Bell

An endorsement from Fred Thompson, the former senator, presidential candidate and actor, could help U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett with one of his biggest challenges in running for governor — lack of name recognition in some parts of the state.

Danielle Vinson, a professor of political science at Furman University, said the nod of approval from the well-known Tennessee conservative should give Barrett a short-term boost in positive public exposure.

“It gets him some attention from the media, and it helps voters who are paying attention make a connection to Barrett that may help them remember who he is,” Vinson said.

In endorsing the congressman from Westminster, Thompson was returning a favor. Barrett endorsed Thompson when he ran for president in 2008 [...]

Republican gubernatorial candidate and Third District U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett made a campaign proposal Tuesday to expand an immigration and customs enforcement initiative that would equip local law enforcement with the training and authority to tackle illegal immigration in all South Carolina’s counties.

Barrett, who is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Immigration Caucus, is proposing a statewide expansion of Immigration, Customs and Enforcement’s 287(g) program.

“287(g) is a program that authorizes the Secretary of Homeland Security to enter into agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, and it permits the designated officers who have been through that training to conduct immigration law enforcement,” Barrett [...]

Barrett Calls for Crackdown on Illegal Aliens

COLUMBIA, SC – Pointing to South Carolina’s record high unemployment rate and looming budget crisis, Gresham Barrett, Republican candidate for Governor, today called for a crackdown on illegal immigration. Barrett, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives Immigration Caucus, will propose expanding an Immigration and Customs Enforcement initiative that provides local law enforcement with the training and authority to tackle illegal immigration to all of the state’s forty-six counties.

“America is a beacon of hope in the world and ours is a nation of immigrants,” said Barrett. “But, there is a right way and a wrong way to come to this country. I have zero tolerance for people who sneak across our borders, break our laws and then take the [...]

The State: Fred Thompson endorses Barrett for governor

U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, an Oconee County Republican running for governor, has won the endorsement of Fred Thompson, a former presidential candidate, U.S. senator from Tennessee and actor.

Thompson said in a prepared statement: “You just don’t get much more conservative than Gresham Barrett. He’s a freedom fighter who can get things done for South Carolina. As governor, Gresham will work to establish a climate for commerce that creates opportunities for all of the state’s citizens by scrapping the state’s antiquated tax code, reducing discretionary spending, restructuring the Department of Commerce, ensuring employers have access to a highly skilled and well-educated workforce, and aggressively recruiting new businesses to South Carolina.”

Senator Fred Thompson Endorses Gresham Barrett

COLUMBIA, SC – The Barrett for Governor campaign continues gain momentum with voters across South Carolina and national conservative leaders alike. This morning the campaign announced that Senator Fred Thompson, former presidential candidate and icon of the conservative movement, endorsed Gresham Barrett for Governor. Senator Thompson released the following statement regarding his endorsement:

“South Carolina is facing unprecedented economic hardship. More than
270,000 people are out of work, and Washington is only making matters
worse. The Democrat regime in charge seems to have abandoned the
time-tested principles that made this country great: individual freedom, a
strong free-market system, low taxes, a basic belief in the power of
American entrepreneurism, and a respect for the values that strengthen our
families and our communities. Well, I haven’t lost faith [...]

Nikki Haley Goes Negative

Our campaign manager, Luke Byars, just sent out this response to the latest negative attack from Nikki Haley.

Dear Friends,

South Carolina is facing record breaking unemployment. Over 270,000 of our fellow citizens are out of work.  We are in the midst of the greatest
economic crisis since the Great Depression.  Across our State people are
suffering.

Fortunately, Republican Gresham Barrett has a plan.

Last month, he introduced a specific detailed jobs plan to put South
Carolina back to work.  He believes we need comprehensive tax reform so
that our tax system is both fairer and flatter. He believes that we should
restructure the Department of Commerce to recruit new jobs to our State and
he has proposed an initiative to match up 40,000 open and available
positions with South Carolinians [...]

The Orangeburg Times & Democrat: Candidate talks jobs with local GOP

By PHIL SARATA, T&D Staff Writer
Saturday, February 20, 2010

One GOP gubernatorial hopeful says comprehensive tax reform and a restructuring of the Department of Commerce are needed to create jobs in the state.

U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett spoke to the Orangeburg County Republican Party Thursday night about his plan to put approximately 270,000 unemployed South Carolinians back to work.

“We have about 40,000 jobs that are currently unfilled because we don’t have qualified employees,” Barrett said. “If elected, I would ask for temporary powers for the governor to match up workers with employers so they can hire them on the spot. We can use workforce training and development dollars to train these folks.”

On the issue of taxes, he said, “I don’t have a [...]
